Gartner coined the term Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms (MEAP)

So what is a MEAP?

A MEAP is a platform that enables the rapid development of Enterprise Applications that can be run on a variety of different smartphone platforms.

Why is this important?

SmartPhones are now viewed as essential tools of doing business. Users are no longer satisfied with just email on their devices, they want to be able to access line of business applications on their smartphones. What does this mean for a business? Employees are more efficient, they have access to current information and working outside the office becomes a lot easier.

The key elements of a MEAP are: developing a single application and deploying in multiple platforms, fast development of applications and easy to publish updates, a suite of management tools to make deployments and management of devices in the field easy and seamless integration with any back-end information source.

Who would use a MEAP?

A MEAP is perfect for an ISV looking to increase revenue from a new product stream (quickly and at little cost), it is also perfect for System Integrators that are looking to provide full solutions, including mobility. A company can also use a MEAP to mobilize data within their organization regardless of whether their data is from in-house applications of commercial products.
